Since 1970, Peter E. Randall Publisher has produced more than 400 books, most of them heavily illustrated volumes related to the history of New England people, places, and organizations. As subsidy publishers, we produce books on behalf of varied clients: individuals, historical societies, and non-profit organizations. communities, and businesses. We have worked with Madison Avenue law firms, international clients based in Washington, D.C., with institutions such as Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, the Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire, and Essex Institute in Salem, Massachusetts, and the United Nations.

In addition to a wide variety of local history and town history books, other subjects covered by Peter E. Randall Publisher include genealogy, Shakespeare, the Revolutionary War, presidential politics, the Maine woods, poetry, biography, collections of photography, cookbooks, international trade, and fiction.

We received the Stephen Harvard Prize for excellence in the book arts in December of 2002, from the Baxter Society in Portland, Maine, for the design of One Woman's Work: the Visual Art of Celia Laighton Thaxter, published in 2001 and distributed by the University Press of New England. The Stephen Harvard Prize is designed to stimulate interest in the book arts, and to support book artists and artisans. Prizes are awarded every three years. One Woman's Work received the award in a competition, which often recognizes handcrafted books.

The award winning title is a collection of five essays, which examine the life of Celia Thaxter as a visual artist and not solely as a poet. Over 180 illustrations, with 120 of those full color, showcase Thaxter's china painting, oil painting, and as well as photographs of her family and friends. The book's first printing sold out in less than a year. It will be available again in June of 2003. This title was produced for the Portsmouth Athenaeum. See more award-winning titles.

About Peter E. Randall

A native of the New Hampshire seacoast, Peter E. Randall is the twelfth generation of his family to live in the region. He has been involved with publishing since graduating from the University of New Hampshire as a history major. Before he began his own publishing company, he was editor of a weekly newspaper, and for seven years edited New Hampshire Profiles magazine. Since 1974, he has authored 14 books ranging from collections of photographs and travel guides, to local history. Recent books include:Ghana: An African Portrait Revisited, New Hampshire Then & Now, New Hampshire: A Living Landscape and Portsmouth Marine Society titles including: Gosport Remembered: the Last Village at the Isles of Shoals. Peter's 1985 Portsmouth Marine Society publication, There Are No Victors Here: A Local Perspective on the Treaty of Portsmouth, has just been reprinted.
