Portsmouth Unabridged:
New Poems for an Old City

Edited by Maren Tirabassi, Photography by Richard Haynes, Sponsored by the Portsmouth Poet Laureate Program

portsmouth unabridged Herman Melville said, "It is not down in any map: true places never are," but Portsmouth, which is on the map, is made true by the poet's eye. In this reading tour of Portsmouth, what we thought was familiar becomes wonderfully strange.
Donald M. Murray—Poet, Boston Globe columnist

Here is an anthology of site-specific poetry from ninety-two contributors between the ages of nine and one hundred years. Edited by Maren Tirabassi, the Portsmouth Poet Laureate from 2001 to 2003, and including twenty-two black and white photographs by Richard Haynes, this book serves as a fascinating blend of old and new impressions of the little city on the Piscataqua River.

The poems and photographs celebrate Portsmouth, New Hampshire's unique literary and artistic vitality. Set in all parts of the city and out the Piscataqua to the Isles of Shoals, the poems focus on the importance of place in our lives. Contributors include many well known poets such as: Robert Dunn, Marie Harris, John Perrault, Esther Buffler, Rodger Martin, Elizabeth Knies, Chris Elliot, Mimi White, Mickey Blanchette, Pat Parnell, and Walter Butts.

Maren C. Tirabassi is a poet, liturgical writer, and pastor of Northwood Congregational Church, UCC. Her books are The Depth of Wells, Faith Made Visible, and Blessing New Voices (an anthology of prayers and poems by adolescents), An Improbable Gift of Blessing, Gifts of Many Cultures, and Touch Holiness.

Richard Haynes received an MFA in Photography from Pratt Institute. His clients now include Houghton-Mifflin, Prentice-Hall, and Oxford University Press. Besides his photography, Richard is also an accomplished painter. He lives with his wife and family in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

This publication is a project of the Portsmouth Poet Laureate Program and is supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and by the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as by a grant from the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation and by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.
