Peter E. Randall Publisher Book Catalog

Songsmith, books by musicians

an imprint of Peter E. Randall Publisher

Folk music in book form is the essence of a Songsmith title. We use the word “folk” to mean independent music, now often called Americana, or roots music. We are seeking authors who wish to approach the folk music world with a book. As a subsidy publisher, we provide a full service experience, starting with a raw manuscript and ending with an award-winning bound book, and/or e-book. We are interested in all genres—fiction, non-fiction and children’s titles—as long as they tie-in to the world of folk music in some way.

Publisher and CEO, Deidre Randall, is also a songwriter. She understands how to reach the market of book lovers that exists within the folk music world. Songsmith was born to serve the need of that “folkie” audience. They want to read books about folk music, written by authors who are part of the folk community. Songsmith is an imprint of Peter E. Randall Publisher, which is an independent publisher in business since 1970 with hundreds of titles in print.

Songsmith launched its first title in September 2011. We launched the imprint with the national release of Revival: A Folk Music Novel, by Scott Alarik,in both trade paper and e-book versions. Our second title, released in March 2012, is Sing To Your Baby, a full color, hardcover book with CD, by Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer.

Criteria for a title to be published on the Songsmith imprint of Peter E. Randall Publisher:

  1. The content is unique, high quality and offered in a format that is saleable.
  2. There is a clear connection to folk music in the content.
  3. The author is an active participant in the marketing process.

Songsmith authors retain all rights to their own material and receive all proceeds from sales. As with all of our titles, we take no percentage of sales. Our standard agreement allows the author to retain rights to all material. All we ask is that we be allowed to arrange reprints for at least three years.

Strong marketing partnerships are a hallmark of Songsmith titles. Becoming a Songsmith title also means you gain access to our marketing and distribution services. We have developed a list of folk music related media, who are receptive to our books. We offer several distribution options for both print and e-book versions of our titles. For each title we market we design a custom program, based upon your desires and our recommendations. We desire the active participation of authors in the marketing process. For Songsmith books it’s important to have a partnership that includes the author, publicist, distributor and sales representatives. One of the Songsmith initiatives is to marry folk music lovers with their local independent bookstores. Statistics tell us the folk music lovers buy books and that is what we are seeing!

If you seek a beautiful, accurate book to provide to fans directly and/or through traditional book channels, we can produce it for you. Contact us to learn more about Songsmith and to see if your title fits our list. We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours in words and music,
Deidre Randall
